Etymology

Markland Fm, Mark (e )land (e )1555FF , 1576 DbA xx, 1601FF , 1604, 1606Ct . 'Boundary land', v. mearc , land . It may simply be the boundary land between Elmton and Whitwell parishes, or between Db and Nt, but if the name is old it should be noted that Whitwell was on the boundary between Mercia and Northumbria (942A ASC).
