Etymology

Charnock Hall Fm, Sharnockhall 1538–44 ECP, Charnok Hall 1559 Hall iii, Charnake Hall 1561Portland , Charnocke Hall 1570 Exch KR , Charnock Haull 1583Dep . It is apparently identical with Heath Charnock and Charnock Richard (PN La 129, 130), which Ekwall believes to be Celtic in origin. The most likely explanation of the present example is that it is a transferred name from one or other of the La examples though no documentary proof is available. In 1570 it was held by Gorgius Comes Sallop '.
