Etymology

The site of the abbey was in a place called Deepdale, 'deep valley', v. dēop , dæl 1 , this being shortened to Dale. The abbey is very frequently referred to as de parco Stanley (e ), parcum Stanley (e ) from its situation in what was then Stanley Park, v. park and cf. Stanley infra 607.
