Etymology

Grislow Field (6″), Grystlyfeld , Gristlyfeld 1356, 1364 DbA xxii, Gristelfeld 1416 DbA xxiii, Grysteleyfeld 1501, 1503 ib, Grisley Field 1767 Burdett. Literally 'gristly open land', v. feld , the first element being a derivative of OE  gristle 'gristle', used in a transferred sense, probably here of land difficult to work. It is rough and rock-strewn, with a thin soil cover. For the first element cf. Gristlehurst (PN La 54).
