Etymology

This should be compared with Mainstone (PN D 228) and Sa and may be a hybrid name of a common type, the elements being a Brit word corresponding to W  maen 'stone' and stān, with feld later added. Alternatively it may be 'huge stone', v. mægen , stān .For the later forms v. Chinley supra 76.
