'Stone quarry', with the second element OE *græfel, a derivative of OE grafan 'to dig'. An early alternative form le Stondelf 1315HarlCh is particularly noteworthy as showing the substitution of a more usual word with a similar meaning for a rare one. v. græf , -el 3 , (ge)delf.
