Etymology

In spite of Ekwall's arguments to the contrary (Studies 165–6), there seems little reason to reject Walker's suggestion (PN Db) that this is 'Cēolmǣr's hill', v. dūn . The spellings in -ei -, -ey -, -ai - would be due to AN influence; cf. R. Mease supra 12. The later spellings show the common interchange of dūn and tūn .
