Etymology

Perhaps 'rocking stone(s)', v. būg-stān, as suggested by Ekwall (DEPN). Alternatively it may be simply 'buck stone(s)', v. bucc , stān . It is Kynges - because Buxton was part of the Royal Forest of the Peak. For Halywall cf. St Anne's Well infra 53.

In all probability Buxton is to be identified with Aquis Arnemeze 7th Ravenna, for which v. further Archaeologia xciii, 23.
