Etymology

Poole's Cavern, Pool Hole 1614Plan , Poole hole 1630 DbA ix. The traditional explanation of the name is that given by Thomas Hobbes in De Mirabilibus Pecci (1636) and by Charles Cotton in The Wonders of the Peak (1681) of an outlaw named Poole who made his dwelling there. There is no documentary evidence to support the tradition.
