Etymology

Burfoot, Burfoot gate 1691Map (v. geat ), cf. Burton Naze 1611Senior , the name of the spur of land nearby above the Wye. The two names are obviously connected, the latter being apparently 'farmstead near a fortified place', v. burh-tūn with næss 'headland' added later. The precise significance of burh is not apparent.
