Etymology

This is a difficult name in view of the medial -i - which may be a reduced form of -ing - found in some of the late forms. Alternatively -i - may be original and the later -in (g )- analogical. With these con- siderations the first element must remain unsolved, though ME  berse 'forest-enclosure' might be considered. Perhaps 'cottage in a forest-enclosure', v. cot .
