Etymology

Shuttlewood, Shittilwod 1486Portland , Schetylwode , Schetelwode 1485Ct , Schityllwod 1489Portland , Schittilwod 1521 ib, Shitlewodd 1539 ib, Shuttlewood 1540Ct . The first element is scyt(t)els 'shuttle, bolt, bar', but it is not clear what its exact sense is when thus compounded with wudu. In dialects it has a meaning 'gate-bar' and it has been suggested that the p.n. means 'a wood in which gate-bars were cut', cf. Shutlanger (PN Nth 106–7).
