Etymology

Hilcote, Hullecote 1236 FF, Hilcote 1417 Cl, 1597FF . 'Hill cottage', v. hyll , cot . The form Hilduluescota e. 13th Darley has been noted which seems to belong here. In the charter it is associated with Blackwell and Newton, infra 213. It is quite clear however that the spelling Hullecote as early as 1236 can hardly be a reduced form of Hilduluescota . Perhaps the latter may have been an alterna- tive name for the place. It is 'Hildwulf's cottage', v. cot ; cf. Hilderstone (PN St 79) for the same pers.n.
