Cum Tor

Early-attested site in the Parish of Baslow and Bubnell

Historical Forms

  • Cumter 1483 DbAxxiii
  • Cumtor 1500 ib

Etymology

Cum Tor (lost), Cumter 1483 DbA xxiii, Cumtor 1500 ib. Although the material is slight and the topography cannot be checked it is apparently 'rock in a valley', v. cumb , torr , both elements being Celt loan-words in OE. It is possible that this is a Brit name, a compound of cumb and torr .
