Etymology

'The fortification at Barley ', v. burh . The first part of the name is of similar origin to Barlow infra 203, either 'boar clearing', v. bār 2 , lēah or 'barley clearing', v. bær 3 , lēah . This must have been the earlier name before a fort was built there. No traces of any defence works have been noted in the area.
