Historical Forms

  • Fyndon 1415 Longstone
  • Fin Cop 1767 Burdett

Etymology

Fin Cop, Fyndon 1415 Longstone, Fin Cop 1767 Burdett. The earlier name must be compared with Findon (PN Sx 197). The first element is OE  fīn 'heap (of wood)', sometimes used of a hill; the second element dūn was later replaced by copp , a word which itself means 'rounded hill'. Locally the hill is known as Great Finn.
