Etymology

The first element in this name is clearly ME  averys , NCy average , 'eatage of arable land after harvest,' v. average sb. in NED. This carries the word back some 200 years earlier than the earliest form hitherto noted in PN ERY 319, s. n. averys . 'Marsh land where average is found,' v. holmr . The form in RBE, as is often the case, is a bad one.
