Etymology

This is probably a compound of OE  waroð , 'bank, shore', and wīc, hence 'dwelling on the bank,' as suggested by Ekwall in DEPN. For ME  warthe , warde in place-names, v. Ward (PN D 82, 120, PN Sr xiii, PN Ess lvi).
