Etymology
The numerous forms of this name vary too widely to establish its precise origin. As observed by Lindkvist (127), the first part of the name is ON veiði -búð , a compound of búð with a word veiðr , meaning 'hunting' or 'fishing.' The chief difficulty presented by the forms is the frequent appearance of an r in the second syllable. It is probably a remnant of -ar , the gen. sing, of búð , which occurs in Bowderdale infra 440, but its persistence is remarkable, and it has given rise to forms in burg and berg which are at variance with the other materials for the history of the name. But the series of forms as a whole con- firms Lindkvist's derivation, and the name may be translated 'þveit by the hunting or fishing booth.'
