Etymology

The first element in this name is probably the personal name Ne (a )le .The second is hūs. Nelebigginge 1269 Cl, 1339Lowther , Nelesbigginge 1269 Cl, 1339Lowther was also in this neighbourhood, and may be the same place, or it may refer to another building (v. bygging ) belonging to the same man. Cf. also Neelesdores 1605 CW xl (supra 145), close at hand. Barrouse refers to the bars which once stretched across the Carlisle-Wigton road here (H ii, 463 n.). Cf. Barras supra 70.
