Etymology

It is probable that these two names are really the same and that the first element was originally ON  tví , 'two,' or conceivably the OE  cognate twā and the second the plural of haugr. In that case, the name must have meant 'two mounds.' Cf. Trehos Wapentake (L) 'three mounds' (EHN i, 59) and Forehoe Hundred (Nf) 'four mounds' (EHN i, 78).
