Etymology

There was also a piece of land close by called le Torrey (1626Boothby ). This is clearly the old name of the Kirk Burn and is identical with Tory Brook (PN D 15, RN 15) and R. Torridge (PN D 14, RN 413), 'violent, rough stream' (v. burna ), corresponding to the Flintshire Terrig, ModW  terrig , 'ardent, severe,' from torri , 'to break.'
