Etymology

It may be Stepnay 1612 PR (Millom). This is a compound of ON  stafn and erg. The word stafn developed a number of specialised meanings in ON, such as 'stem of a ship' and 'gable- end,' but its original sense was 'stock' or 'pole' and it is probably used with this meaning here.
