Etymology

'Ūhtrēd 's sætr.' According to Denton (42), the place takes its name from Uchtred to whom Alan, second lord of Allerdale, had given a carucate of land in Aspatria. Geographically, this identification is possible, but it should not be considered certain, for Uhtred was a common name in 12th-century Cumberland.
