Etymology

'Hare wood,' v. skógr . Haresceugh is higher up Raven Beck than Nether Haresceugh. 'Monk' from the holding of the Priory of Lanercost granted by Ada, daughter of William Engain (1183 (1402) Pap). Nether Haresceugh must have been held by the family of John and William Charbocle who are mentioned under Kirkoswald in the Subsidy Roll of 1332.
