Etymology

This is probably, as suggested by Ekwall (DEPN), the British carrecc , 'rock' (Welsh , Corn  carreg ), to which the ON  haugr, 'hill,' was added at a later date. It stands on a long hill rising above the marshes. NB (ii, 454) suggests that it means 'craggy hill.'
