Moricambe

Early-attested site in the Parish of Holme East Waver

Historical Forms

  • Moricambe 1616 Camden
  • Moricambo 1695 M

Etymology

This name and that of Morecambe Bay (La) are due to different antiquarian attempts to locate the Μορικάμβη εἴσχυσις , the Moricambe estuary of Ptolemy, which was near the mouth of the Eden. The meaning is, of course, 'sea-bend'.
