Hethersgill

Major Settlement in the Parish of Hethersgill

Historical Forms

  • Hedrisgill or Hederesgill 1509 LP
  • Hethersgill 1583 Border
  • Hedderskale (bog) 1517, 1522 LP

Etymology

The forms are very late. It may be that Ekwall's suggestion for Heatherslaw (Nb) in DEPN, viz. derivation from OE  hēahdēor , 'tall deer,' is the right one here. If so, 'ravine of the tall deer.' Cf. Hetherford infra 102. Hedderskale (bog )1517, 1522 LP may refer to this place, and if so the form probably illustrates the confusion of gil and skáli noted in other names in this county.
