Etymology

v. kelda . Other springs in this parish are recorded in Marigold Spring (6″), Mary -Keld (or S . Mary 's well , corruptly marigold-spring ) 1705 CW iii; Thanetwell Cottage of which the Introduction to the Parish Register (xxii) says “There is a well near Newsham called Thanet Well, which some suppose to have been named after Princess Thenew (Thanew), the mother of St Kentigern, the apostle of this district”; Tolly -Keld (lost), so named in 1705 (CW iii); the Hall Well (lost) 1578, 1594 PR, and Kerkeld brigg (lost), recorded in 1589LRMB .
