Etymology

In the parish was Gilcawman Noike 1602 PR.

'Cambán 's ravine,' v. gil and ScandCelts 24. Cambán is an OIrish  personal name, a diminutive of cambo -, 'crooked' (cf. Welsh and Irish cam ), found in other Gaelic personal names. The name occurs as a by-name at an early date in Iceland, probably as a result of adoption by previous Norse settlers in Ireland. Its appearance in Cumberland is presumably due to the same cause. For the order of the elements, v. Introduction.
