Catlogan

Early-attested site in the Parish of Greystoke

Historical Forms

  • Cartlogan, Cartlogan Thornes 1537 LP
  • Catlogan, Catloggan 1589 LRMB

Etymology

This is clearly identical with the Cartlogan mentioned as a meeting-place of the rebels in the Pilgrimage of Grace (1537 LP). The second element is presumably Gaelic  lagán, 'hollow'; the first may well be Gaelic  cat 'wild cat.' The cart spelling may be the attempt of a southern scribe to represent the [a·] of a northern witness.
