Etymology

The Salkelds are on opposite sides of the Eden, and doubtless they take their name from the same 'sallow wood,' v. s(e)alh, -hylte (so DEPN). Later there was confusion between hild and hil (l ) from hyll . The Salkelds must originally have been a royal manor, held by Ranulf Meschin, which escheated with his other Cumberland lands when he became earl of Chester in 1120. Old or Little Salkeld was held by Adam, cook to Queen Eleanor, by gift of Richard I. For the nature of this tenure see Round, King 's Sergeants and other Officers 249 ff. Adam was also called Salsarius from his office in the sawcery of the king's household. Hence the tentative appearance in 1292 of the name Sauser Salkild to distinguish his holding (Ass 134, m. 12). The name King 's Salkeld is derived from the tenure of Great Salkeld by the King of Scots by grant of Henry III in 1242 (Ch i, 268).
