Etymology

This is probably, as suggested by Ekwall (DEPN), OWelsh  cil crūc , 'retreat by a hill.' The first element was replaced at an early date by gil , 'ravine,' and the pronunciation of the final consonant modified under French influence. The spelling -crux is due to association with Latin crux , 'cross.'
