Etymology

Apparently this is a Celtic place- name, the second element being, as Prof. Jackson suggests, the Primitive Cumbric *monið 'mountain,' Welsh  mynydd . The forms of the first element are ambiguous, but Prof. Ekwall compares the Welsh  Tormeneth in the Liber Landavensis.
