Historical Forms

  • Waytecroft c.1174 HolmC
  • Whatecroft c.1187 HolmC
  • Waitecroft 1198 1201 ChR

Etymology

'Wheat croft.' The forms in wayte -, waite - suggest that the name contains ON  hveiti rather than OE  hwǣte, or at least that an OE  Hwǣte -croft has been Scandinavianised. An East Lincolnshire example of the same name appears c. 1200 as Wetecroft , Watecroft and Weitecroft .
