Etymology

Professor Ekwall suggests ON  Flatskógr , 'flat wood', comparing Norw  Flaaskogen MNorw  Flataskog (Gaardnavne xiv, 146), and Evenwood Du. Four other examples of this name have so far been noted—Flaska infra 222, the field-name Flasco in Waverton supra 160, a lost name in Dufton (We) which has forms Flastoth Wood 1323 Ipm, the wood of Flascowe 1323 Cl, Flasescogh 1359 Ipm, Flascoe 1601Survey , and Flascoe Wood in Musgrave (We) for which no early forms have yet been found.
