Etymology

This is a well-rounded hill and the origin of the name is perhaps OE  hwyrfel or ON  hvirfill.Cf. Whorlton, by Whorl Hill (PN NRY 177) and Whorwellsdown (PN W 135). The first word may, however, be quarrel , 'quarry', as in Quarryhill supra 270.
