Etymology

Sir Ifor Williams suggests that this is Welsh  rhyd , 'ford,' and maen , 'stone,' or its Med. Welsh  pl. mein , as in Rhyd-y-main (near Dolgelley, Merionethshire), which means 'ford of the stones.'
