Etymology

'Lower .' No evidence has appeared to support Hutchinson's statement (ii, 535 n.) that “there are three camps, or stations,…not very remote from one another, Netherby, Middleby, and Overby.”

The Romano-British name of Netherby was Castra Exploratorum 'camp of the Scouts' (v. Appendix). A unit of Exploratores derives its distinguishing title from Bremenivm at High Rochester Nb (CIL vii, 1030, 1037).
