Etymology

'Salter's stream', v. saltere , sīc . It may be possible to identify this place. The name applies to a stream and a place or district upon it.It is found in contexts associating it with Stapeley, Wisterson 71, 42supra , Wychefeld 16, and Willaston. It had a ruined bridge in 1621 (Sheaf3 22 (5255)). The only stream which runs through Stapeley, Willaston, Wisterson and Nantwich is that variously called Cheer Brook and Cheney Brook (118). The hamlet on this stream is at Cheerbrook Bridge, etc. infra . It would seem that the stream was Saltersich , and the bridge and the hamlet were named from it.Cheerbrook Bridge may then be the site of Saltford 73supra . This would be on the Nantwich–Woore route, v. 148 (route XXVII).
