Etymology

'Farm called after Scēafa', from the OE  pers.n. Scēafa and -ingtūn, with feld , grēne 2 , hall , and myln . Cf. Shavington Sa (DEPN), where this pers.n. also occurs, and Shannock 164, Shauintonfeld 2192. The location is near Basford, Hough and Wybunbury 48, 64, supra , 80 infra . The manorial suffix Woodnoth is the surname of a family settled here from the thirteenth to the seventeenth centuries, cf. William & Randle Wodenot 1298–9 Orm2 iii506, and it distinguishes this place from the other Shavington, ten miles away. The DB form has been ascribed to Sound, but it suits Shavington better, cf. Tait 155 n.133.
