Etymology

'Wīghelm's mound', from the OE  pers.n. Wīghelm and hlāw. In the first form, the church is 'the church of Bollin', cf. Bollin Fee infra , to which the advowson belonged. This p.n. is confused with that of Wimboldsley 335infra , in Wynbaldeleg c.1230 Orm2 iii 587n., and Wimboldsley or Wilmslow c.1620 ib 545. Wilmslow is the name of the church and churchyard, extended to the old village which lay in the townships of Bollin Fee and Pownall Fee (Orm2 iii586). The street- names of this village, and unidentified f.ns. and minor-names for the parish as a whole, are grouped for convenience.
