Etymology

This p.n. also appears in the f.ns. Warynsamhillis 1500, Warencham hills 1515, 1 75. The p.n. is either 'the village of Wǣrma's, or Wǣrmund's, people', from the OE  pers.n. Wǣrmund (cf. Nantwich Hundred 326infra ) or its derivative *Wærma , with -ingahām ; or, 'the village Wǣrm (und )ing ', from hām and an -ing 2 formation on the pers.n., v. Altrincham 7supra . For the pers.n. cf. Warmsworth WRY 162, Warndon Wo 175, Warmington Wa 274. The forms W (o )rch -, Werb - are inexplicable save as scribal sports.
