Etymology

'Tilli's or Til(l)a's stone', from the OE  pers.ns. Tilli or Til (l )a and stān, with grēne 2 , hall , court , and loge . The place is on the line of a Roman road, cf. Tilston Lane infra , and the stone might have been a milestone or some similar feature.
