Etymology

The surname de Bornell 13(?) NRA 0406 No. 3 (witness to a deed of Neston, Brimstage and Eastham), de Burnhull 1286ChFor (appearing at Ledsham), 1288 Court 94, may be derived from this place. The p.n. is 'wood of-, park and enclosure at-, Burnhull , i.e. hill by a stream or spring', from burna and hyll , with wudu , park , (ge)hæg. Burnelwodehed , Burnelwodeheld are 'the top end of-, the hill-side or declivity at-, the wood of Burnhull ', v. hēafod , helde . The district was included in the park of Shotwick Castle infra in 1327 Cl 170.In 1335 ChRR (DKR xxxvi407) the parks of Shotwick and of Burnilwode are named separately as if then still distinct. Woodbank 208supra may formerly have been part of the castle park.
