Etymology

'Farm by a stream', v. pōl 1 , pull , tūn . The stream is Pulford Brook 155infra . The DB identification rests upon Tait 143. The spelling of Cott . Nero C iii f.215, the foundation charter of the abbey at Poulton, is corrupt. Facs 1 and Dugd v 628 read Puntona , Dieul 74 reads Poutona , but the MS has been altered, either to Puntonā from original Poiltonā , or to Puiltonā from original Pontonā . For the date of this document cf. Facs p.2. For the alternation of -nt - and -lt -, cf. Poltimore D 444. The abbey of Poulton was removed in 1214 and re-established near Leek St as Dieulacres Abbey. Poulton remained a grange of Dieulacres until the dissolution, cf. foll. It lay beyond Delamere Forest from the St house.
