Etymology

Barnes1 726 proposes Welsh allt (cf. Corn  alt) 'steep hill-side, (rocky) hill, cliff, mountain-woodland', as in Alt La 29, to which have been added the English equivalents hyrst 'a hill, a wood' and hrycg 'a ridge', v. also grēne 2 , hall , myln , mǣd . The place lies on the north side of a slight eminence, v. Addenda.
