Etymology

From tūn 'an enclosure, a farmstead', with banke , grēne 2 , hall .The first el. is probably a pers.n. but the form is obscure. It could be the OE  pers.n. Ecgheard or Ecghere (cf. DEPN), uninflected, or the gen.sg. Ecgware of the OE  fem. pers.n. Ecgwaru . However, Dr von Feilitzen may well be right in taking Egerton as analogous with Tibberton Wo 170 (Tidbrihtincgtun > DB Tidberton ), i.e. as a reduced form of an -ingtun p.n. upon the pers.n. Ecghere , v. -ing-.
