Etymology

Wivercot, Wyvercot (lost), c.1300Chol J. This lost place in Macefen is apparently the same as Wyuercote 1298 Court 150, Orm2 ii254 (lit. Wynercote ), 1290 Plea (DKR xxvi 41, lit. Wynercote ), Wyvercote 1290 Ipm 11463, Wevercote 1290 ib 459, a place in the St Pierre family's share of the Malpas barony. The published forms are referred by Ekwall (DEPN) to a place Weavercote which he associates with the r.n. Weaver together with Weaver and Weaverham 3163, 205. Weavercote has not been found, and the form is not recorded. Macefen is not near the R. Weaver. The p.n. is from cot 'a cottage, a hut' and the ON  pers.n. Víðfari (Feilitzen 406).
