Etymology

'Booths at the north borough', or 'the north manor-house of Booths'. The latter is less likely, for the house is south of St John's infra , and south-east of Cross Town 74supra . If St John's were the site of the market borough in Booths created at the same time as that in Knutsford (probably at Cross Town), c.1292 (Orm2 i488), then this would have been 'the north borough', and would give name to the part of Booths so occupied, v. norð , burh (dat.sg. byrig ), bōth , hall . Cf. Knutsford 73supra .
